2022 VTA Design Competition Information
IMPORTANT – PLEASE READ CAREFULLY
For a student designer to be eligible to compete in the Design Competition, the Google form at 2022 VTA Design Competition intent to submit must be completed/submitted by no later than 8pm (EST) on Monday 10/17/22. If this information is not received for a design submission by the deadline, it cannot be properly submitted and will not be judged. The form includes the following categories: • Submission category (scenic, costumes, or both)
• Student designer’s name (First and Last)
• Contact email for student designer (must be able to receive outside emails, as some academic emails do not allow this! A parent/guardian email may be used)
• Supervising teacher’s name
• Teacher’s contact email
• School name
After the information above is received, the student designer will be provided with the link to their unique submission folder and instructions enabling them to upload their competition design packet. Final design packets must be uploaded to the provided submission folder by 8pm on Monday 10/24/2021 (one week after intent to submit deadline).
Although the 2022 VTA conference will be in person this year (yeah!!), some of our competition adjudicators will be remote. This allows judging, and your precious feedback, to be provided by theatre academics and professionals from all around the country, as opposed to the much smaller pool of conference attendees. The benefits are great, however remote judges dictate specific procedures and deadlines must be met to reap the rewards. This includes filling out the intent to submit Google form, as well as following the specific guidelines for the designs themselves and proper submission procedure (all of which is included in this info packet)
Recap - Design Competition Submission Process (please refer to this packet for more detailed info) 1. Google form of intent by 8pm on 10/17/22

3. Upload design packet by 8pm on 10/24/22

Design Guidelines:
The Play - Hairspray by Mark O’Donnell and Thomas Meehan
Characters – Pick 3 characters from the play, at least 1 female and 1 male, for which to design costumes
Design renderings – Each of the three rendered characters (designs) should be placed on its own individual sheet and include: title of show, character’s name, act/scene, and designer’s signature. Character renderings should be at least 8” high, as to provide adequate size to illustrate details. Examples of renderings are found on the following page.
Croquis – You may use croquis if they are of adequate size (8” or larger). You may find your own or use the links provided on the following page.
Research images - Provide 4 research images (total, not per character) – 2 regarding time/place and 2 that inspired your designs. Each image should be labeled so that it may be referred to in your designer’s statement.
Designer’s statement - Submit a typed statement that briefly explains what they are attempting to accomplish with their designs and explain the reasons for those choices in your statement. Within your statement you should refer to each research image by label and discuss why you selected it. Your statement should be no longer than two pages total.
Presentation board – Renderings must be displayed on a freestanding standard 36” x 48” trifold presentation board (panels are all 36” tall, widths are 12” left, 24” middle, and 12” right). The board should be labeled with your name and school. You may include additional design elements such as: fabric swatches, notes, sketches, etc. as part of your design composition. All items must be attached to your presentation board.
Binder/folder – You may choose to display (attach) your printed designer’s statement and research images on your presentation board if space and composition allow. If not, you will need to include them in a binder or folder, labeled with your name.
Original designs - The designer must enter “original” designs, not previously executed or plagiarized designs.
Deadlines/guidelines – If you do not meet the established deadlines and/or follow the guidelines provided in this info packet, you will be ineligible to complete in the design competition.
